TV series — Firefly

For everyone who has seen it Firefly is a very hurtful yet joyful topic. This great TV series, which was created by Joss Whedon, was unfortunately cancelled after a not even completely aired first season. When I first started watching Firefly I was pretty sceptical since I hadn’t watched much science fiction until then. I had no idea how great cowboys in space could be. Like in every Whedon series you absolutely fall in love with every single character. They also made a movie called Serenity because of the show’s post-airing success and a tenth anniversary special named Browncoats Unite aired on the Science Channel. There are references to it in The Big Bang Theory and Community and some cast members got together for a 10th anniversary panel at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con.

Edit: because of my fandom for Firefly I completely forgot to tell you at least a little bit of the plot. It’s set in the future and is about the crew of the spaceship Serenity. They do their work, which mostly consists of cargo runs or smuggling, throughout their universe and a lot happens. I don’t want to be more specific, actually, since I’d like to give anyone of you the opportunity to explore this series on your own and just jump into it. I did and I enjoyed watching it so much this way.

Genre: Adventure, Drama, Science fiction, Space Western

I love it because: it made me like Nathan Fillion and science fiction, the crew’s dynamic and love for each other, River’s storyline, the phrase “shiny” and that they curse in Mandarin Chinese. It’s hard to list items here, because it’s just overall an amazing series and you should watch it right now.

Favorite character: Jayne. Definitely Jayne. Adam Baldwin as this hardass character was the best choice I could’ve imagined. The episode revolving around him is one of the best. Also when you get to “know” Jayne you understand that inside he’s really soft and a decent guy.

You might enjoy it if you liked: Doctor Who, Falling SkiesDefiance, Dollhouse, Cowboy Bebop, Deadwood

  1. My favorite character would be Mal. Definitely. But I also like Jayne and the whole bunch!

“Falling Skies” is a comparison I don’t really get. The show is – in my opinion – poorly written and doesn’t match the Whedon standard. I’d rather put “Buffy” and “Angel” on that list… 🙂

    • Yeah, they all are great! All this reminiscing made me want to watch it again. 🙂

I agree with you that Falling Skies is nowhere near the Whedon standard, but especially because of that I guess that people who liked it will be simply mind-blown by Firefly. I also thought about putting Buffy on the list, but IMO it’s pretty different from Firefly, which is why I chose Dollhouse instead.

      Thanks for your feedback!

    • When I watched the first season of Defiance it became clear to me that it is a way better comparison than Falling Skies because they really are quite similar, but also thanks to your comment.
